This is the first General Election with voters required to show photo identification to cast a ballot under North Carolina's new voter ID law. Durham came in second, with more than 12,000 early and absentee ballots cast. The highest turnout for early and absentee voting ahead of Tuesday's election was in Charlotte, where almost 30,000 people cast ballots early. Statewide, more than 154,000 people have voted early or turned in absentee ballots, according to the North Carolina State Board of Elections.
